to worm or not to worm that is the question

Recommended Posts

we worm ours every 3 months with flubenvet. definitely don't wait until they have worms, worms are something that must be prevented rather than cured.

maybe someone else can advise if you should worm them when they arrive as I've never had chickens from omlet.

When I enqured about the worming issue and Omlet Hens, I was give to understand that litter and faecal samples were examined for evidence of worms, and treatment is given accordingly. They are not, however, wormed as a matter of routine.

On that basis, one can reasonably safely assume that when the Omlet hens first come to you, they are likely to be worm free.

There are several 'preventative' products out on the market. Vermex being one of them I found it didn't work, but many swear by it.

As a 'preventative' I like to use Apple Cider Vinegar in their drinking water, as it has other beneficial effects too. Whether it is effective as a preventative, I couldn't say, but I think it must help as when I used Vermex and then treated the hens with Flubenvet, they had a good clear out, and there was obvious evidence of worms. There never is now when I worm them.

I worm my hens every 3-4 months routinely with Flubenvet as they range on the same area of ground and therefore have an increased risk of reinfestiation.

If I were you I would worm your hens in a couple of months time if they have been free ranging.

For clarification Flubenvet isn't a preventative, it is a treatment.

Go to a horse supplies shop (look up Tack Shop or Equestrian in yellow pages) and buy the ACV - Apple Cider Vinegar they give to horses. I buy the NAF brand but there are lots of others on the market. The one in the picture below costs me £6.25 for 2 Litres and lasts 6 months or more.

IGNORE the dosage in this link as that is for horses, I'm not sure of the correct dose for chickens but personally I give about a capfull per water glug.

This is the stuff

Thanks everyone.

I think I will let them settle in then get some wormer (flubenvet) and do them then ensure they are done every 3-4 months.

I have no idea the best way to do it but have been reading the info about how to give it (on grapes/ in their pellets etcetc!!!) so will have a read when its time.

Wouldnt like them to get worms poor girls!

When we wormed our new chooks I just scattered the Vermex (that's what the breeder solde us) on top of the layers pellets in the Grub feeder. Is that the corect thing to do as I am not sure how you ensure they all get an equal dose?

Re the Apple Cider Vinegar - Is it something you ad each time you fill up their Glug or just something you give them once a month and does this replace the need for a vitamin tonic or supplement it?

Always more to learn.............
