Yippee - getting 3 new hens in March!

Recommended Posts

Haven't been on here for yonks but wanted to tell everyone about my three new hens that are arriving in March!! :D We are getting:

Black Plymouth Rock

Gold Laced Wyandotte

Barnebar

We had a new chicken run built last weekend and feel ready to take on some more hens now we have had our others for a year! Some of you may remember the terrible time we had with bullying (which ended up in us rehoming a hen) and I am keen to avoid this so any advice welcome. I should say that the new hens will be fully grown.

Also, I would love to hear from anyone who has these breeds to tell me what they are like.

We have already chosen the names, Handa, Mondi and Akeyo after a story my daughter's class were reading at school called Handa's Hen!

Plymouth Rocks are supposed to be brilliant little hens, easy to keep and friendly. I didn't know you could get black ones, she sounds lovely.

I have a Barnevelder, which a Barnebar is related to, and she is a fab girl, lays all through the Winter even though she's a purebreed :D

Good luck with your new hens, take the intros gradually and I'm sure you'll be fine :D

The best advice we had was to remove the one that was the bully. We did this for 2 nights and one day then let them out in the garden then they all went back in the run and happy!

There is the occasional peck but nothing to speak of.

I have loads of bumper bits if you are interested, just pm me.

Thank you all for your replies. :) We are really looking forward to getting them. Some of you said to take the intros slowly, over 2 to 3 weeks - does this mean we need to sort out some different accomodation for the new hens? We are getting the new hens from Wernlas and they suggest to put the new ones in the cube run with the others on the outside for the first couple of hours and then put them together later the same day but to observe closely in case of any problems. Our new chicken enclosure is about 5m by 15m so quite roomy I would have thought?

Really don't want a re-run of the pecking problems we had before!!!!!
