Hi there

Some of our chooks are loosing feathers around their tails and under their tummy. I have been reading about allergies to hemcore and wondered whether it could be an allergy to the shredded paper? It is all shredded letters, bank statements etc. Has anyone else had this problem? I have checked for creepy crawlies and can't find anything. Q, the worst affected, looks really sore and isn't growing any new feathers.

I havent even got my chickens yet but just from reading on here sounds like most people are using some bedding like aubiose in the nest.

 

I suppose sitting on some shredded paper could be a little rough?

It doesn't look like a moult. As the new feathers don't seem to be appearing as they did when they moulted.

Hi. I am the lady with the chicken allergic to hemcore but we use shredded paper in the nesting box. My 'sensitive skin' chicken is now fine as we switched to easibed for the run (find wood shavings from horse supply place) but we still use shredded paper in the roosting box. Are you sure it's not bullying? If you don't think it is, you could switch the paper for something else and see if that makes a difference - what do you use in the run? Could you put that in the box? What is the skin like in the bald patches - when my lady was suffering from her allergy it was all red and scaly and sore looking.

Hi there we use shredded paper in the nest box haven't noted any problems.... hope you soon get to the bottom of it

Mine are struggling with the lime in the soil apparently....... all bald

I just use newspaper shredded, as felt the letters etc were one scratchy(but prob so is straw?) but I didn't think it absorbed anything. I use flax bedding with a little handful shredded newspaper for decorating themselves & nest

i think the hemcore and aubiose was irritating our girls too sto we have switched to shredded paper as a trial.. so far so good though!
