egg bound? Please don't read whilst eating

Recommended Posts

Our beloved lulu has gone to the chicken coop in the sky today.

I would just like some advise. she had a little bit of bleeding around her backside last night but we thought maybe she had just been pecked by one of the other hens as they have all been pecking a little bit lately.

Anyway my husband said she came out as usual this morning so he didnt realise she was poorly. anyway when he went to collect the eggs this evening she had passed away. When he moved her she had an egg underneath her which was covered in blood and he said it looked like some of her inside had come through her vent too.

I would just like to know does this sound like she could have been egg bound or could it be something else, for instance could we have saved her? as we are both feeling terrible at the moment.

Also what do people do with their birds once they have passed away as we remember reading somewhere that you are not supposed to burry them

thanks in advance

Lynsey

how sad, you clearly loved her...she might have been eggbound and/or laid a particularly large egg which can cause a prolapse...

. We can't all be experts about every single chicken ailment and there may have been other symptoms that you missed, not everyone can watch their girls 24/7. I wouldn't torture youselves with 'what if'.

we buried our little lottie in the garden when she passed on.

Sorry to hear about Lulu, what a shock for you both.

I'm certain there's nothing you could have done. Sometimes an egglaying problem will occur with no warning, an unexpected weakness. She won't have suffered long, and she had a lovely life with you.

Best wishes, I'm sure you have lovely memories of Lulu. :)
