I went to my local RSPCA shelter (Stubbington Ark, Fareham) the other day and to my surprise they had about a dozen abandoned chickens there waiting to be rehomed. Of course I wanted to rehome them all!

 

I hadn't thought of the RSPCA for chickens, but if you're looking for some it's worth a look. I might get my next batch from there.

 

They also had a turkey which had escaped the chop at Christmas by absconding from a farm. Its great escape was certainly worth it because staff assured me it will now live out its days away from the Christmas dinner table.

I suppose that with the great boom in chicken-keeping, the RSPCA will be finding they get more of them.

must admit I'd never thought of them ... but I suppose if people will abandon cats and dogs, they are just as likely to abandon chickens, only the cats and dogs have more chance of survival.

I pass the ark every day and often wonder if they have chooks... I wonder how many of them are from the chicken farm down the road.... there is always one or two checking out if they can get to the other side... though the farmer assures me he has only ever lost 3 in 20 years to the road!

 

are they brown girls or different breeds.... ???

I read that wrong and read it had got the chop! hmmm castrated it did they me thought! yeh dopey mooo

They are sure to get them really aren't they?

 

sadly but at least they will take them, might be a good place to start to look if/when anyone gets left with just one lonely girl!

I suppose it's inevitable that because chickens have become "fashionable" some will end up at the RSPCA because some people won't have thought it through before getting them . I had never considered that before.

One of the dog walkers I know works for RSPCA and she said that they'd got quite a few chickens in. So might be worth considering a visit.

The Ark had about ten chickens when I went there the other week. A bit of a mixture really, the normal looking chicken types... browns/blacks and a bantum which the staff had dubbed Sharon (Osborne) because it had a big pom pom of feathers on its head.

 

All they wanted for them was a donation, didn't mention a price. I don't begrudge the RSPCA a bit of money for the good work they do.

thanks, was just curious as they tried to charge a friend of DH's £50 for a dog which I thought was steep! He ended up buying a puppy in the end, charging such prices deters people IMO. So, that's why I was wondering how much the chickens would be.
