Purple wheat

Recommended Posts

Purple wheat? high in protein says wiggly wigglers. Is it good /bad / ok for chooks?

Is it better than sunflower hearts for (was it liver or kidneys) that too many sun flower hearts are not good for.

My particular interest is looking for a diet suitable for a non laying ex bat, Too much mixed corn is not good for them makes em fat, she doesn't like weetabix but lioves malted wheats (cheap shreddies) porridge oats (will too many bung up her crop?)

any suggestions?

I know it is not possible to completely feed her separately, but only laters cannot be good for her. and I can offer her separate at least 3 times a day. which might be best for her.

I don't want her system trying to make eggs when it wants/needs to stop! (oh, and she is a BIG girl)

I think it is often referred to as Indigo Wheat and is very high in protein and vitamin B so I suspect it's best to mix it in with either mixed corn or something similar rather than give it in large quantities on its own. I have used it, but mixed in with their afternoon corn - I originally bought it for the wild bird but had lots left so I wanted to use it up. The girls seemed to like it anyway.

I found this also Sandy when I Googled for you "purple wheat"

I use it too - the hens love it.

I get it by the bag from Wiggly Wigglers, & make my own chicken museli with it, mixing it with oats,Bokashi, raisins & dried mealworms 8)

great idea, am trying to make a mixture for a non layer.maybe could try and add chick crumb? what oats do you use just normal porridge oats?

Depends on the age of the chook really - you could use growers or chick crumbs

it's for the one that's "not herself" just now.

She was released 10 months ago. had fully featherd way before others, put on loads of weight, though is head chook. Hasn't laid in months(though nor did one of dancing clouds till just now!) perhaps/maybe ,can't be sure the odd softee, laid 2 lashes recently.

Oh and comb has got smaller, (will look at old photos to see how much)

She may well have decide to retire from laying by the sounds of it.

I'm afraid that you have to exepct that with ex-batts :?

You can't blame her either as being cosseted by Sandy has got to be a winner for her :D:D:D well done Sandy for rescuing her  Maybe the Purple Wheat will do the trick - you never know.

thank you, how kind. I couldn't answer as I read that as said chook was on my lap. She is not right I hope there is chewing gum in the nest in the morning or a softee as this will be a good ish explanation. :!:

Claret she would not eat the bokashi & plain yoghurt................... until I splatted it on the floor

I wouldn't admit that to non chickeny people...

but you guys know I am nuttier than you :D

Like most of you I don't care about the eggs, just as lomg as she is well, but wasn't there a thread about too much calcium being bad for non layers liver?Hence looking for a best diet for her. :!:
