4m x 3m Omlet pen, cube, new auto door still boxed and coop light

Anyone watching this? They've just built a wooden coop - looks as though they used roof felt ( red mite) and the run is tiny... Two lovely large hens ( light Sussex?) dumped in it. Or am I being picky ??

I said exactly the same but then I suppose it's better than buying battery eggs so if that was the choice...

 

Anyway, once they get the bug, they'll end up building a bigger run anyway, we did!

granted, we only started with 4 (ex batt) chickens but we thought our initial run would be more than adequate but once you fall in love with them, you want to give them the best of everything

I was just hoping they were going to put something round the outside as the skirt didn't look very big and I could just imagine a fox being able to tunnel in really quickly

AND they called it " fox proof" !! But I wonder if I would have been so worried if I hadn't been educated by this forum? How many will be incentivised to copy them?

I think, or I LIKE to think, that once people get the idea to have chickens, that they go away and do their homework/research and find these things out.

 

I got the idea of having chickens from a post on the MSE forum, there was also a link to the Omlet forum so I followed it and lurked for a bit and read up about chicken keeping etc

 

I'd LIKE to think that anyone "incentivised" by the prog would do the same. I think any prog that promotes chicken keeping is a good thing. The coop and run weren't brilliant but they were okay to start with, driving round the countryside I've seen similar set ups and while, to me, they aren't ideal, I still think having hens in your back garden is far better than buying eggs commercially.

 

Just my opinion and I can see your POV though.

I hope you're right, Poet. Certainly when I was offered 3 chicks as a birthday present, I went into research mode. I'd seen eglu's in the back of Good Housekeeping ( been buying it for years bit it's never worked ..) so then found Omlet and the rest is history.

 

And yes ! I thought the chickens were in the bin bag!!

Thanks re the comment about the run, in the end DH suggested we just put a roof over the garden and have done with it!

At first I thought it was a funny idea to borrow a couple of chickens, but I guess this way they can find out if chicken keeping suits them before committing and then possibly rehoming.
