Falkor
I have "accquired" a big fat log from the park! (ok, so I shoved it in the back of my car in the dead of night after the man from the council cut the tree down but I had asked him the day before honest!) I intend on drilling some wide shallow holes all over it and then hiding meal worms and corn in it as a bit of enrichment for the girls whilst they are confined to the run as the snow still hasn`t melted! OSH loves to roll the guinea pig treat ball around to get the corn out so I think she would be good at a little treasure hunt! Can anyone see any problems with this idea. The man from the council said they were only cutting down the tree as it was dangerous in high winds, it is not diseased or anything. stoice
I'm sure it'd be fine. A bit like the wild bird version you can buy with fat and seed squashed into it? You could use mashed potato or thick porridge to bind togther some treats into the holes. I think it's a great idea. Are you going to stand it up (Partly dug into the ground to stop it falling over) or lay it down? if it's high enough up you could also tie treats like apples, cabbage, broccoli or sweetcorn to it too. I'm all inspired too now! Once I get my walk in run (When this weather ever dries up) I'm planning some mezanine (sp?) levels with ramps and perches etc. One of the perches could be extra chunky and full of holes to stuff goodies into. Nice one

stoice
Thanks for that ANH. Just spent ages reading through it all. SO excited about my run-to-be now. My dad, the DIY expert, is making it for me as part belated Crimbo pressie / part birthday-to-be pressie as, as you know, they are not cheap. I already hang cabbages and when i re-hemcore their run i mix corn and mealworms in with it and just 'dump' it in the middle of the run. They happily spread it all about for me while hunting for treats. We'll soon have such spoilt chooks!!!
Plum
I was going to have fun hiding food but then didn't because of attracting rats. I have got a cat treat ball though which I will try. Will be interested to see how yours get on. My friend had a rotten old log full of insects and put that in for hers which spent ages looking for insects. So I am on the lookout for one.
