Co-habiting

Recommended Posts

Hope this is not too daft a question but just thought I would ask.....

I'm working on doing a plan for re-designing our garden and of course the chickens have to be factored in but I'm also thinking about what other pets I can sneak into the garden.

If I can fit in a decent sized walk in run and bought another Eglu what could co-habit with our 3 chickens - ducks? rabbits? guinea pigs? a combination of these or none of these ?

Or is that simply the daftest idea ever?

Does anyone have any experience on this?

At a childrens farm I used to work at, they had a really big walk in run (which ran along the back of the 3 heavy horse stables and tack room just for an idea of length) which they had 2 doors into and a fence about 3 foot high in the middle splitting the run into 2.

It was raised a foot or two off the ground, and was inside the barn so well covered from the elements so they didn't have to shut them all up at night.

They also had watering cans and wheelbarrows, garden tools an old unused beehive (which the chickens used as a nest box) etc in too for hiding places and the back wall was painted with beatrix potter characters on it.

In that they had a giant rabbit on one side, a few guinea pigs on the other side, and it also had quail, a trio of golden pheasants and chickens in it. Because of the fence in the middle, the birds could all hop over the fence if they wanted to get away, but it was too high for the guinea pigs and the rabbit never used to try.

It used to work quite well, and they all used to get along fine, but I think you'd need quite a big area and lots of hiding places for the guinea pigs.

So I think you could have one big walk in run, but have little dividing fences for the guinea pigs and rabbits, or maybe you could have a gin-lu inside a big walk in run.

They also had chickens and ducks living together all over the farm in different sized pens, and free ranging who most of the time got along fine.

Hope that helps
