jennybrom
hiya, does anyone know if there is anything special about bokashi bran as opposed to normal bran? My local pet shop sells something labelled just as bran so i wondered if there was a difference as it would be easier to buy it from them than ordering online. My and 2 pepperpots arriving next Wednesday so v excited! jen
Egluntyne
Yes...it contains special micro-organisms called Ems - Effective Micro organisms which are a beneficial blend of yeasts, fungi and bacteria.

OwenLdn
what was waiting for me when i got home???? you guessed it the bran! Well looks like the girls are going to be getting some nice porridge for breakfast tomorrow- silly question but can i feed it to them dry or if wetted- how much water should I add??? It just says on it "feed as normal" on the pack- which isnt much help to a newbie like me! thanks!! Owen
jennybrom
hi Owen, on the shop page above it says it should be given as 5% of the weight of the feed - I guess you just mix it together! jen
Hen Watch
can i feed it to them dry or if wetted- how much water should I add??? Owen, I just chuck a handful dry straight ontop of their pellets. Mine are fussy - some days they eat it, some days they eat the pellets and leave the bokashi at the bottom of the feeder. If they do that then I add it into their treats as it sticks to cooked rice etc.
OwenLdn
Thanks guys- ive given a separate bowl of a couple of handfuls of the dry bran in the run this morning. Hermione was straight up and trying it- I think she is definitely the adventurous one- she is the only one to have worked out how to use the Super Glug so far- the others still use the separate water dish! Its Cilla that I hope eats some ive noticed she does some right funny poops! Someone does some really dry ones that look abit like one of those sawdust cat litter pellet. (Gosh im obsessed with chicken poo!)
nikplus
My bokashi bran has gone mouldy. Not entirely sure why - I guess my outhouse must be a bit more humid than I thought, despite having a dehumidifier in there. Moral of the story: keep it in the driest place you can. OwenLdn
Thanks for the heads up- mine was going down in the cellar which unfortunately like the rest of my house seems to be suffering from damp!! I will decant it out of the big bag into some airtight containers I think- not sure why I bought such a big bag- 12.5kg is quite a lot of bran for my lot to get through! Does it have a sell/use by date that anyone knows of?
debsea
have used the bran from wriggly wrigglers for several weeks now and the chickens devour it. It does seem to eradicate the smell in the cube It claims all sorts of health benefits aswell.
