pencilbeckett
Hi All I just wondered if anybody near Stafford has any chicks. A friend runs a playgroup and i am taking my ex batt Geraldine in along with some of my eggs and some food and corn to show the children. She also wanted to show them some chicks. I am not sure how feasable this would be but wondered if anyone who has any chicks would be willing. Please be brutal if i am asking the impossible because i have no experience of chicks and just said i would ask. Thanks for looking x
The Dogmother
if you're thinking of little balls of fluff, then they'll be too cold away from their brooder.
BeckyBoo
Hmmmm, and if they were hatched to a broody mum you'd have to have her too, you couldn't put the chicks with the ex-batt as she'd kill them. Hopefully someone will have a mum and brood they can lend you for a day, I'm too far away and my hen hasn't even thought of sitting yet. It's a lovely idea though and I hope they enjoy seeing your big girl, I took one of mine in once when MD was in reception year and she bok-bokked around the classroom much to everyones delight!! feemcg
I've taken chicks over to my daughter's class and after-school club, it's just across the road though, I had them in a shoebox with a small hot water bottle (wrapped in a towel). They were out the brooder for 20 mins at most and didn't seem to suffer any ill--effects i.e. they weren't cheeping which they would have done if they were cold (must admit though......I took the boy chicks ). BeckyBoo
Just to add, I don't think they'd come to any harm if they were inside but away from the lamp (but don't hold me to it) I say this only because I've done only two hatches using a broody hen, but they were outside from day one. As soon as she hatched them they were venturing outside with her always nearby but they were fine. BeckyBoo
