bokbokbokbok
Well, my two arrived today via the mail man! I was certain that I would have to pick them up from the post office - when someone rang my doorbell at noon today! They smell like flea dip - I suppose they do this at the hatchery or because of postal regulations. In any case, they look a little travel weary and appear to have plucked at each other's tail feathers in the box. Or maybe it was from an earlier incident. They are pooping already. They haven't noticed the glug or the grub or the little dish of grit. They are pecking at the weeds in the run, however. I'm amazed at how domesticated they are. They make tiny purring sounds when I'm around, although I can tell that they are not keen on the dogs looking in on them. My husband will set up a fence around the Eglu tonight. I gave them some beet greens, but I think most of it is still there. They are also ignoring the coop altogether, and sleeping in the run. I hope the flashlight/torch method works... Kalu
Hi Our girls (and ) arrived today as well! We have three, and , two went to bed fine this evening but the wasn't having any of it. Amazingly though the torch trick did work, she was a bit hesitant but eventually went in and I managed to shut the door quickly. Hope you enjoy your hens, ours have been very entertaining so far although they do seem to be sorting out the "pecking order" and Flo, the , seems to be getting the brunt of it at the moment. MedusA
Congrats to you both. My Araucanas were incredibly dense when I first got them. I had to put them to bed for several days before they got the message.
bokbokbokbok
We had to go by the broom method to put the chooks away for the night. I'm amazed that the hens didn't seem at all bothered to be prodded into the Eglu. They made tiny little "boks" and then slowly clambered in. This morning I rushed out of bed at 8 AM (I know, this is hardly anything to boast about) to let the hens out - but they wouldn't budge! Granted, it's a very cloudy day today. By noon, they were still in the Eglu, so I prodded them out from the hatch opening and then closed the Eglu. They moved around and pecked at the weeds some more. They were drinking the rain drops on and around the glug! They still haven't figured out the grub, either - although they very rapidly ate two worms I dug up for them. Two hours later, they are back in the Eglu.
