Hens@HalfMoonLane
I have a 2 year old ex bat who stopped laying at xmas. She has been fine up to today but I noticed she was yawning and adjusting her crop. I went out to her and her vent is protruding slighty, and it is slowy pulsating, her breating is slightly laboured. She has quite a swollen abdomen. Her crop has definately emptied overnight and I think she is pooing fine. Is it stuck egg? She is wormed and otherwise healthy and has been free ranging all morning normally. I have given her a shot of Baytil I had in as I was at the vets last week with a different hen who has an off and on respiratary problem. I'm about to phone the vet but if any one has any advice please help. I have struggled to find a vet who will see my hens and although they are lovely where I go they admit to having very little experience with chickens. I live at Wakefield if anyone can recomment a vet. Thanks Joy

Hens@HalfMoonLane
Thanks for the link. Unfortunately Sybil didn't make it, she was more ill than she was letting on and the vet put her to sleep this afternoon. The vet was so lovely and spent ages with us and the receptionist who kept chickens herself seemed genuiley upset.

Hen Watch
Joy, I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I have the same with a chook who I suspect is egg bound. I've done the warm water bath today and she's indoors now in a cat box keeping warm. My vet's appointment is Monday evening and I hope she either passes the egg by then or stays alive until then. Fingers crossed.

BeckyBoo
Sorry to hear about your hen, they hide their symptoms so well, by the time they seem ill, they can be very ill indeed. But at least she saw the sun and scratched on grass and had a chance to be a real chicken. BeckyBoo
