Rosie bottom

Recommended Posts

Poor Rosie's bottom is looking very 'rosie'.

She started loosing her feathers weeks ago, couldn't find any feathers or see any plucking going on by anyone!!

She has lost them on her rump, sides (under wings) and belly. Her skin is increasingly red and can look very angry. We have tried pecking spray and she gained a few on the top of her rump just above the tail but still looks plucked. After all these weeks of watching I still have seem no sign if pulling by herself or others?!?!? They've all been wormed and have been disuted for mites and lice frequently so sign of creepies on inspection.

Any suggestions?

Have had similar with a couple of mine, despite no sign of lice/mites and regularly and recently wormed. I too have no idea, but one of mine has now grown lovely new feathers and the other looks to be starting to do so too. It is baffling.

Hi there

Several of my chickens seem to have the same problem of bare bottoms. One of them (Q) is almost completly bare and just has tail feathers left (looks a bit like a shuttlecock!). I have also searched for mites, lice etc and watched for pecking with no luck. How are yours now? Does anyone know what i can put on Q's back as it looks really sore? I think I read about using Sudocrem is that right?

Most of mine are like this ... I not sure why ... they have bumpa bits all-around.

Tails and neck feathers are missing on most of them.

I have tried everything barring sellotaping their beaks shut.

They seem quite happy in themselves.

I wonder if it is happening when they are roosting ... it was all okay till I added three new hens but that was last September!

I have a similar story and can't work out what's going on.

Harmonie, the self-chosen bottom of the pecking order and very timid, is being stripped of feathers from her back, starting at the tail and travelling half way up her body. She looked luck a plucked chicken but yesterday I noticed her skin had gone red.

Echo, the tiniest hen but very sociable and friendly, has feathers missing from both wings and from her back. The wings look sore and red. She is also very underweight, but I think this is a separate problem.

2-3 other hens have missing bottom feathers and one Amber Star, who used to be bottom of the ranking before Harmonie arrived, has a few feathers missing from her back.

None of us has ever seen anything happening in the daytime, so I think it might be happening at night. I'm just not quite sure what to do about it. if I separate the two worst victims, I will have to re-introduce them later.

Can I use human antiseptic cream (e.g. savlon) on their red skin?

Would the purple spray hurt on sore skin or irritate it?

I feel most inadequate having to ask this question, but it's been going on for weeks and I can't fathom it out.
