Leicester_H
see http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7986598.stm whilst initially it seems like a good report, I have some concerns if rehoming chickens does become 'trendy' and people get into it for the wrong reasons. I assume prospective adopters are 'vetted'/counselled in some way ?? H
Egluntyne
I was neither vetted nor counselled. Just asked some basic questions about what facilities I was offering for the hens.
Dodge
Whilst your concern's are understandable, the stark alternative of someone, anyone not adopting/rescuing a battery hen is that the hen is fed into a mincing machine to make pet food. Don't forget that the poor battery hen has lived no existed in a wire cage about the same size as an A4 piece of paper. So any life after that has got to be an improvement in its quality of life. As a nation of animal lovers and due to all the adverse TV coverage of the plight of battery hens, I think that the vast majority of hens adopted will go to loving homes as demonstrated by the kindly people on this forum. A chickychickychick-ENN!!
I'm both heartened and cross about this. It's so good that so many people want to adopt hens. Big yay for that. And that's such a sweet positive little film. But there's a little bit of me that thinks so long as people buy up the 'used up' chickens, then the industry thinks it can just keep on breeding battery hens. We need a change in legislation so that they have a minimum care standard while being used for food production. Actually, wouldn't it be good if BHWT could get every hen adopter to sign up to a petition or campaigning for that to happen? If they've seen a fourfold increase in adoptions, which means hen keeping is snowballing, imagine the amount of support they could get and noise all those supporters could make if it's a condition of adoption that they support some lobbying work to make battery conditions better?
