urgently need help! what wire/mesh to use for new run?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

OK, urgently need help! our neighbour is building us a fab new chicken run for the girls however forgot to order the weld mesh (d'oh) and now the cost is sooo high that we simply can't afford it :(

Would ordinary chicken wire be ok? The run will be 10ft long. 7 ft deep and 6ft high with a corrugated plastic roof, all constructed from good strong timber. The base is paved with a 1/2ft long and deep concrete edging to prevent digging....

The run should be started this week so urgently need advise!!

The problem with chicken wire is it's not fox proof. It's designed to keep chickens in but not preditors out.

I guess it could be used short term until you can afford to replace it with weldmesh. In my experience to buy it in large amounts the price is not much different.

I bought mine from here:

http://www.hillsofdevon.co.uk/

Their prices are very good and will deliver very quickly.

Knew you lovely people would come through :D

Think thats what we'll be doing, mainly on the grounds that Hills do a 30m roll of 16g mesh for £54, even if we need two rolls, that a helluva lot better than the quopte we got from the guy this morning...

sitting comfy?

£293!!

As the wood and labour is coming to £440 odd quid asusming it takes 3 days to build, an extra almost £300 was way too much for us, but think we can stretch to a few rolls from Hills

HI I paid approx £50+ from Howe fencing in Herts a cant remember if its 30 or 35 meter roll its the biggest roll u can get..should do the job..seems a shame if u have good timber..may cost u more in the long run

Mine is 1/2" by 1 inch but if u can get the square type may be easier to matchup for chopping those last bits?

good luck

indie :)

dont know the devon place but most garden centres and some Diy shops only supply smaller rolls

My run is 9x6x6 (ish!) I used less than 30m of weldmesh so try to work it out before you get more than one roll so you don't waste money.

Mine is 19g and looks pretty sturdy but having just bought some 16g too for a second run I can say its the bees knees!

Mine came from Hills of Devon too, very efficient company
