Guest
we want a wooden venetian blind for the living room but because the window isn't a standard width, we're having to go for made to measure blinds which are a lot more expensive than off the peg. We want a pale wood, birch/beech colour to match our Ikea billy bookcases. I've rung a cple of local companies and been quoted £175, £165 and btwn £135-£150 respectively. I found an on-line company http://www.blinds-depot.co.uk/ and put the measurements in on-line and they seem much more reasonable so have requested some samples. Just wondered if anyone knew if the prices we were quoted were silly money or quite reasonable. They fit them for you but with DH being quite handy, we don't really need the fitting service. Any advice/recommendations of companies you've dealt with etc would be great but we certainly don't want to pay over £150 absolute limit! The recess measures 170cm wide by 130cm drop. thanks in advance.
Lesley
I can't remember the prices Poet, but we used a company called Harmony for all of ours - I think they are nationwide but they use local people to measure and fit and the blinds are very good quality. theherd123
Im looking for blackout roller blinds for the nursery right now so this topic is very timely - thanks Poet! The companies we have been looking at are blinds4uk.co.uk, wilsons blinds and 247blinds.co.uk. Our windows need a custom fit too so work out at 126 pounds each and we need 2 so we will have to wait til pay day 250 on blinds is a lot of monay but needs must to keep her room cool and dark. Poet i hope you like dusting - wooden blinds collect it like nothing else!
Lesley
....that's why I chose mostly verticals!

They do look good though. I'm afraid I couldn't recommend our company (it was a large well known company) as some of our slats have warped. Apparently it was in the small print that they might do this..... It wasn't pointed out to us though. Good luck with your search.
Guest
warped!!!! That's terrible!
Seagazer
Don't get me started! We obviously called the chap back in, originally because the bits at the end of the top of the blind (I realise that doesn't make sense but its like a covering to make it look pretty) kept dropping off. In fact they dropped off within about 2 hours of him having fitted them. We were having a dinner party and they dropped off The warping happened within a couple of months and we called him in again and he kept going on about the small print. I got so annoyed I had to leave my hubby to talk to him as I was about to lose the plot with him. I would never, ever recommend them to anyone. Lesley
Wooden slats aren't recommended for damp places - I was advised not to use them in the utility and kitchen.
Seagazer
Harveys (I think thats right) I've tried to block them from my brain. No that isn't right - its Hilarys - Edited April 20, 2009 by Guest
BarbaraJ
Our living room blinds came from Next, have been very happy with them but they are a standard size.
Guest
thanks to those who replied We had a local firm come out and give us a quote yesterday, £146 just for very plain pine coloured blinds including fitting! I sent for some samples from blinds depot and they arrived today, I've placed an order with them which comes to £63 (delivery is free) and the wood is nicer than the local company too! Ian can fit them so we don't need fitting anyway. So, that's sorted, thanks again, especially about who to avoid!
Lesley
Harveys (I think thats right) I've tried to block them from my brain. No that isn't right - its Hilarys - We started with Hilary's - had no problems. In fact these were the people who advised us not to have wooden slats. They are franchises I believe? - oyu must have had some duff franchisees. The people we used then moved to Harmony as they believed that the quality was better and our most recent blinds in this house are from Harmony. Yes the chap that fitted our blinds is a fireman Our blinds are in our dining room - it was him that advised us to get wooden venetian blinds as I was going to go for roman blinds. They are in our dining room and there is no chance of any damp in there so why it should warp I don't know. To add insult to injury Cookie has chewed the bottom couple of slats on one of the french doors (whilst my OH was in the room ). We will replace them at some point but they do look stylish, if you ignore the chewed, warped ones
TAJ
Our 160cm wide one from John Lewis off the shelf was £99.99 2 years ago, so that price seems very good for made to measure and fitted. Tracy
