FiggyPudding
We have 3 new chickens collected from our local animal rescue ( they are from a 'family' of 9) & they seem quite happy with us. This morning they took it in turns to nest & we very excitedly collected 2 eggs At lunchtime today, the 3rd hen (no names yet) went into nest & did lots of clucking & after coming out twice to see what I was up to, when back in. She came out almost crowing, so quickly went to see if she too had laid. Unfortunately, her egg is very thin, looks like she had put her foot in in & it has no yolk. Might this be settling down stress ? although she does seem the boldess ( I think she is a Rhode island red/white). She also has some baldness above her bottom, with red dots on it. Help ! Christian
Are the red dots new feathers coming through? Like small pimples? Check in a few days to see if the feather shaft is coming through. They will look like tiny quills and the feathers come out of that. Check them for lice and mites though and use a powder to give them a good dusting, just in case. The red spots could be red mite, but they usually do not live on the hen, but in the surrounding area. The yolkless egg is probably just settling in nerves. I'm sure she will be ok. Janty
Did you know that a yolkless egg is called a wind egg or a fart egg?
