Eggbound chook - any advice welcomed urgently

Recommended Posts

That's a great bit of advice and easier for me to get hold of cuttlefish than limestone flour. I will get some today.

Sounds like you have a good vet - I now have vet envy!

Yes, I'm a very lucky lady! I tried calling lots of vets before I chose mine and am happy to drive quite a way to see them.

When my girls were being helped by the vet a couple of weeks back, she (the vet) was then away on the day I decided to have the hens put to sleep. Two days later a "sorry for your loss" card came through the post from her which I found genuinely touching. She's a brilliant vet and incredibly passionate about chickens!

Hope your little lady is doing okay today

Budgies - thanks for the advice with the cuttlefish bone and cod liver oil - that has really worked and I'm getting some really good hard shelled egs again now.

My egg bound girl is still struggling to lay normally and keeps getting them stuck but it's getting better each time and she is really good and healthy in every other way so we're just persevering together - it seems to be working! I'm hoping that the next egg will be normal. It actually doens't seem to bother her at all though.

Good news Biker Betty

Thanks for your tip about Liquid Paraffin - have had to use today as one of my newies keeps getting eggs stuck. Hoping that I will be able to help her when she needs it now

Such a worry !

Best wishes

Liz

Thanks Budgies - well she is still swollen and I still think there might be a second egg stuck now - some liquid parafin may sort this out this weekend. Otherwise, by now, it's a touch of perotinitis. It's further back than I've seen before though - not between her legs but more near her vent - so she doesn't walk like john wayne thankfully.

She seems completely and utterly normal and happy otherwise though - and is functioning like a normal chicken except for the eggs - in fact, she has definitely regained her appetite and has learnt a new trick that if she stands in the feed bowl, the others can't get to it so easily and she gets her pick of the goodies! She is a very entertaining little chracter.

Thanks for your thoughts on her - she sends you all a happy cluck to say thanks!
