Broody Leghorn?

Recommended Posts

We think our 8 month old white leghorn, Annie, has gone broody. She is sitting on the nest all day and clucking if we come near. She pecked at my hand when I put it underneath her to collect the days eggs. Usually she is very timid and runs a mile if we come within a metre of her..... Is she broody? (we didn't think this happens very often in leghorns).

Is there anything we should do? (like offer her food and water in-situ?) It isn't always possible for us to remove eggs until the afternoon as we both work.... should be be disturbing her? We don't have a cockerel so her little clutch isn't going to hatch however dedicated she is!

Any advice would be greatfully recieved-

Thankyou

SOPHIA

Yep sounds broody to me  Depends whether you want her to stay broody or break her from it. There are lots of threads on here - lots of people put them in dog cages or the like to cool them down (sin binning) - the temperature has a lot to do with it, and they cannot sit very well in a crate without solid floor. I have just let mine sit it out before but she will then be there for 21 plus days. If you are not hatching I would kick her out once a day to get food and drink and make a smelly deposit, she might break out of it on her own, depends on how determined a broody she is.
