annettec
My hybrid girls are approx 21 weeks now. The black one has grown some lovely red wattles and small comb but the rangers head gear still looks very pale ! Thay have both begun crouching this week ! Does anyone know how long approx before they may start to lay, I guess there is no right answer and do they need to have it all red before they will start to lay her comb and wattles do not seem to be changing at all? Thanks ! Ps Eggs are not the main thing am loving having them just kids keep checking the nest box and would love them to have a gift ! C&T
About a week or so I reckon!! My Gingernut has never really developed "proper" wattles or a large comb... But is laying very happily anyway. There is nothing like finding your first egg - but have you decided how to eat it yet?? Mine was fried and tasted deeee-licious!
annettec
10 minutes after I posted this message found my Fenning black on the nest and when i opened the door to let them out she didn't run out as usual. I could hear her kind of quietly growling so left her alone and have just found my first egg !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Amazing she must have known i was asking the question have saved it for the children for when they are back from school can't wait to tell them !! I had contemplated ringing the school to give them a message but might be a bit obsessive !

sgregson
Well done Starly! Your children will be thrilled, my eldest son (who is 5) has already made a box ready where we can put all our lovely eggs when the girls arrive - little does he know he's in a for a wait
annettec
It really is worth the wait and in fact this morning was the first morning when the kids were reluctant to go and let them out so hopefully it will re enthuse them !!! I really feel like a new mum !!! Our Silkie laid an egg on her first day and then three days later but both were smashed which was just so sad she hasn't laid since despite checking at least 6 times a day !!, but she has laid too today so two very special eggs !! there was almost a three week gap between laying so hopefully she is settled in now and the eggs will flow !!
