Scramble
I know that buzzards can pose a threat to chickens and as I know we have some in the area I'm always extra on my guard. It was coming up to the chickens bedtime - about 10minutes ago - and as I'd tidyed up everything for the day I was sitting by the table on the patio, reading, while the chickens dug in the border, then I hear Yolko scream and I look up and see this massive bird. I'm assuming it was a buzzard as I've never seen anything biiger than them around here it was flying very low directly above our garden and it was looking at the chickens, I dropped my book on the floor and looked at the chickens, Yolko was making a noise and running and chickpea was crouching really low. It carried on flying and the chickens settled down, so no harm done. I don't know hy but seeing that buzzard gave me such a shock I couldn't breath properly and then ammediately started bawling like a baby. The chickens went to bed and I made an extra check through the egg port to see they were in there I closed the run then made another check. I've just come in and I can't stop crying, I know that I'm over - reacting and it's really stupid as the chickens are fine, but it just seems to have given me some perspective of what would happen if anything happened to them. It's tearing my heart apart Thanks for reading, it's made me feel better to get the words down even if it does make me sound silly.
katieadams
You don't sound silly, you just sound lovely!! Sometimes relief of what didn't happen can make you cry easier than when something actually does - take some deep breaths and try to be glad they're ok, and do try not to get too paranoid (easier said than done I know)
Henhathnofury
No indeed you are not silly - my heart quickened even reading about the buzzard. I am very protective of my girls and when we had two foxes come into the garden at night in January, I cried as well..then was a nervous wreck before we fox-proofed the garden. You can take some preventative measures if that helps you feel better. Perhaps a dummy bird of prey or some CDS hung up....I am sure that there will be plenty of people here who can advise better. Remember we are chicken folk now and it makes us sensitive and protective. Don't be ashamed...it just makes you a loving 'parent'...... Patricia W
no - you are normal. Mine kicked up a fuss a week or so ago because a red kite was circling overhead. I never thought to look up so couldn't understand why - it was only when a neighbour asked if I'd seen it that I made the connection. i'd never comtemplated a threat from the skies! We wouldn't be such good chicken mums and dads if we didn't care so much. Tricia
