..lay a little egg for me

Half-hearted broody or something else?

Recommended Posts

My speckledy has not laid for at least a couple of weeks. I've noticed she spends quite a bit of time in the mornings in the nestbox but never any eggs to be found afterwards. She spends all afternoon out and about though, doing normal chickeny things. I had a quick check of her today and all looks OK...no obvious lice, red mite, lumps, bumps, loss of weight etc. I also noticed at lunchtime today when I picked up the eggs from the other girls that the two eggs in one nestbox were warm while the egg in the other nestbox was cold. I suspect she had been sitting in the nestbox with the two eggs. No other broody type behaviour. Is she playing at being broody but can't keep it up or what is she doing?

We have the exact same thing with our speckledy, she's only laid twice since we had her and that's over a year now, she's not laid again. She sits on the eggs that the others lay and the only way to get her off the nest is to rattle the corn tub  Sometimes she irritatates the other two girls who want to lay an egg and you can hear little noises coming from the eglu as though to say "come on get out!". We just let them sort it out.

She does it everyday and we just let her get on with it, she can be sitting in there for up to half an hour and then comes out and just carries on with her day! weird girl I'd call it semi broody. She's also the skittish one, can never get to stroke her or pick her up. We like her though.

One of my girls used to wait until the regular egg layer had laid her daily offering, then would rush into the eglu to sit on it.

When I came out to see them, she'd stroll out of the nesting box, stretching her wings and going "there you go mum, another little egg for you"!!

Ours does exactly the same, waits til one of the others has laid an egg then goes in the house and sits on it! If I open the eggport, she won't get off and she looks angry!! Sometimes she goes in the house and stands there and waits while the other one lays.
