We have a wild duck nesting in our garden (she was here last year and came back, bless!).

 

Last year, no probs, she was right next to our back door quite easy to see and not bothered about us coming and going at all. Produced 11 lovely bundles of fluff.

 

This year, she is opposite back door very well hiden under big plant. She leaves the nest once a day or so for a short time to streatch her legs and get some food etc

 

Despite being so well hidden this year, yesterday my OH came home to find Daisy (the duck, obvious name I know) gone from her nest and the nest badly disturbed with one egg out which had obviuosly been pecked at. Poor Daisy had once again produced 11 eggs and now she's down to 10

 

We've a big magpie that comes into our garden which was suspect number 1 - confirmed when we some it bothering her again some hours later.

 

So, long story short. Me and OH work full time. Does anyone know of a way to deter this magpie which won't bother Daisy?? It keeps on coming back and at this rate she'll have lost all her eggs in 10 day!

If it were me i would shoot the magpie, after all they are just vermin.

They may well be, but people can't just shoot birds in their gardens

 

Even for farmers to shoot magpies thay have to be able to prove that it is the last resort and other methods have not worked! Well, that is the theory anyway)

 

 

Is there any way you could construct a large run with small mesh so that she is left in peace to hatch? It needn't be fancy - just something to keep the magpie out.

Sorry if i affended anyone, no harm ment just a view of mine, I have a large garden and i do hold firearms certificate,

 

How about making a scarecrow out of straw ( just a thought) it may work.

We have a scarecrow to keep the magpies away from the duckhouse - but it scares the ducks as well and then they lay out in the run
