head tilt in new hatched silky chick.. Mareks?

Recommended Posts

have had 8 silky chicks hatch (from 2 sellers) and the last hatched chick seems to have a head tilt/neck tilt and keeps ending up on its back. It took the longest to hatch, and i ended up helping it against better judgement, and at the time it seemed like it had just dried out a bit and found the membrane a bit tough/got very tired.

It hadn't really uncurled much in the 6 hrs since it hatched while in the incubator, but as its now dry i have moved it under the lamp in a box on its own within the brooder (half in, half out so it can move if too hot as it can scrabble but not stand) and plan to wait til morning to see. Just worried its something virally that might pass on to the other 7?

My first thought as its a silky is mareks, but i don't know if it would hatch with that?

If its no better in the morning i will take it to work with me to be euthanised, but am giving it a chance for now.

Any ideas of what might be the cause would be very welcome

I'm sure you are right that it is a bit early for Mareks.

Possibly some sort of abnormality or neurological problem.

It sounds harsh, but it is probably in its best interests to be culled.

Not easy, I know. :( I had to cull one of my hatchlings as it had a problem with its abdomen.

The chick died in the night. I had a feeling it wasn't going to do well, but as it was making progress (it was able to stand) I thought I'd give it a chance. I asked at work about it, and the vets had a general consensus that it was more then likely just a neurologically damaged chick and nothing nasty going on

I will post pics on another thread of the remaining seven.
