Which breeds to get?

Recommended Posts

Hi I have my new shiny purple cube and now need to expand my flock yay!!

I have 2 gingernut rangers at the moment and looking to get something different.

OH is keen on getting a chicken that lays coloured eggs I don't think he believed me when I told him you can get a chicken that lays something other than brown eggs!

I have an urge for a white chuck (not sure why just for variety)

Any advice on what breeds to get and also where to get them from, I live in Milton Keynes and someone recommended cotswold chickens does anyone have any experience of them?

Hi

I have just added some new girls to my family, we had 2 light sussex (light brown eggs) 2 Marans (dark brown eggs), and now we also have 1 Buff Orpington, 1 Columbian (both brown eggs) and last but not least a Shetland who will lay Blue eggs!! Yay!

I got them all from a really nice chap called Keith who has asselby chucks, Howden, North Yorkshire, so a bit to far for you to travel I guess x

Have fun choosing new girls :D

I got 2 from cotswold chickens 5 weeks ago (still not laying yet  ) but lovely and healthy! however had I known about them I would have gone to http://www.northendhens.co.uk/hens_for_sale.htm closer with a good variety and good value too! I also got a 3rd young lady from bell plantation at towcester (again she is refusing to lay too! )

good luck with your search!

Cotswold chickens are very good, always very helpful too I got my hens there

The Bell Plantation garden centre (on A5 just north of Towcester) have a good selection and usually have the Columbines (green/blue egg layers) although no one will ever guarantee that they will lay a coloured egg!

Pear Tree Farm in Astcote (4 miles Noth of Towcester just off the A5) sells (amongst others) Marans (very dark brown eggs) and Cream Legbars (blue/green eggs) they only breed pure breeds so will be more expensive, they also sell Houdans which are lovely looking I think they lay a white egg

Good luck!

barred wyandotte bantams of which DS said "they're even prettier than ours" :!::lol::lol: I think if we had a bit more room I would get a couple of them, they really are gorgeous.

oh i do like the wyandottes big or small they are so pretty...would like some bantams one day in an eglu(i still would like an eglu too....am still in shock as to how easy chickens are to keep)

How nice having to choose the choosing spoilt for choice..............

Thanks for the replies I feel a lot better going to somewhere that is recommended to get my chooks!

However I think my two have sensed that I want more and are behaving like spoilt children. They have woken me up at 6 -630 everyday for the last week or so :wall::wall:

I have tried shutting them in the cube which I didn't use to do but one of them is trying to be a cockeral I think by the noise she is making.

OH has said that I need to put on hold getting more chickens till I can stop them waking him up everymorning :(

Just off outside now to dig in the garage and cover up my new shiny purple cube with something ugly to hopefully keep out the light and keep them in bed.

Fingers crossed they behave the little madams
