"chicken dandruff" Are they moulting?

Recommended Posts

We've had our chickens for just over a week now and the oldest is probably about 20 weeks.. However over the last week they have white specks that look like dead skin. With an inspection on our calmest we have discovered it is coming from the end of the feathers (I don't know what it's called but I'm sure you know what I mean!) and also that they have new feathers growing. The girls dust bath regularly (which is so amusing to watch! :D) but the "dandruff" quickly reappears.

Are they moulting? Is this normal? Or should we be concerned?

Thanks :)

Yup, it's the protective shield that covers the end of the feathers. After they've grown through the skin the protective stuff sheds and it's like bits of paper or as you've said, like dandruff.

Nothing to worry about at all, should be glossy feathers all over your girls soon!
