Sick Chicken, advise please

Recommended Posts

This morning my cockerel Jeffrey didn't come out of the eglu. I kept my eye out for him, but by 11.30 i thought i'd get him out for a drink and food. I brought him into the house, he did drink and eat corn but he had rasping breath. I took him straight to the vet who said he felt thin and prescribed him antibiotics. When i got home i put him back in the run, he had a kwick drink and got back into the nest box and didn't move. i decided to remove him, and bring him in side so he has corn and water of his own which he is eating and dinking. And i have added citricidal to his water. Is there anything else i can do for him or has anyone else got any advise. Thank you.

The vet would have presumably checked all the usual things: the size of his crop etc

Is his poo OK? If he is pooing white liquid he could have an urinary infection, for whihc antibiotics would be the right thing. They will take a time to kick in though so keep an eye on him and note any downhill changes. Make sure he is hydrated and in a quiet place..he may need rest.

When he is better, you could try worming him. Again I am presuming that the vet checked him over for mites or lice?

Good luck and keep us posted...

The vet noticed that he had a runny nose, i hadn't noticed as his nostrels are so small. It was easier to see when on the vet table. I use diatom in dust bath and in eglu, and red mite powder in eglu. However i have lightly dusted him with both just in case, but no sign of lice. His poo is fine. I might try him back on the pellets tomorrow. I used a new preventive scalley leg mite spray on all my chickens a few days ago and i noticed he had "Ooops, word censored!"bley feet, is this normal for a pekin bantam, because they have ferthered feet ?

I yes i worm with verm x every for weeks and i was due to do it again today shall i hold off with all of them till he's better ?

I'd probably leave it a few days if it was me, but you could phone the vet and ask.

If I were you, I wouldn't worm with Verm-x at the moment. Your boy is obviously under pressure right now. I spoke to my vet a couple of weeks back - I had two poorly chooks and they were due to be wormed and my vet agreed that it would be best to hold off until they improved.

However, I'd also recommend that you worm them with Flubenvet. Unfortunately I have heard the same stories from several people - that they wormed their chickens regularly with Verm-X only to find that they were infested with worms.

I'm sending you a PM

Good luck with Jeffrey

Jeffrey is fighting fit. still on his twice a day antibiotics. I returned to his girls late yesterday and he looked back to normal other than he's not eating the pellets. i spoilt him on corn when he was away from his girls. i didn't want him to die and i was desperate for him to eat. What shall i do ? do i give in and feed him corn, maybe till his finished his antibiotics ?

I think I'd try to gradually encourage him to eat his pellets, by reducing the corn each day.

As he's been under the weather it seems a bit cruel to just withdraw the corn in a bid to encourage him to eat his pellets, especially if he doesn't have a great appetite right now. They love their TLC!
