tomalexi
I need to sort out the various weeds in my lawn and, though not keen, am thinking of using a standard weed and feed-type lawn treatment but can't find any useful information on whether these products are safe for chickens. Can anyone help thanks?
Mrs Frugal
Most packets carry a consumer helpline number and these tend to be really helpful when it comes to advice about pets so have a look next time you're in a garden centre for these contact numbers/email addresses, jot them down and give them a try. It's always best to go directly to the manufacturers for advice. I used the Johnson's helpline on the side of a tin of louse spray and they were incredibly helpful. Good luck . Chook n Boo Mum
Since getting the chooks last summer, we haven't used any weed or feed stuff on our back lawn...except the feathered ones ! Where we once had a patch of clover, it's beautiful green grass again, and as far as I know all the moss has been raked out too. DH wants to put the chooks out on the front lawn too, so they can do the weeding there, but I'm not so keen, just incase they get out onto the road BTW, before we had chooks, DH was extremely anal about his lawn, it was his pride and joy - now he's happy to not break his ankle in a dustbath !!! Budgies
I would also recommend calling the company in question and asking them directly. I have never used weedkiller in the three years since getting our chickens, and I really don't mind!!

The little hairy & feathered minxes had dug out the piece of turf which was happily filling this hole & Snowdrop decided to try it for size, with a great long queue of testers lined up around the edge.......it's somewhat bigger now Sha x
Busybird
My OH still wants to keep the area of lawn nearest the house looking good. The chickens run is in another area but they are allowed to free range anywhere. Last week we had heavy rain forecast so he put down the weed and feed. I then kept the chickens in their run for 2 days. It rained very heavily several times and there was no sign of the fertiliser in the ground when I let them free range again. I have no idea if this is okay or not but we have done it before and the chooks have been fine. I wouldn't let them out though until the fertiliser had been well washed in and then left for a while.
