damaged maybe infected air sacs

Recommended Posts

My chook with the once badly broken leg has possibly/probably got a damagedand maybe infection in her air sac.

Nearest to the broken leg it is rattly wheezy. She had a long lasting antibiotic jab.

Now she was released in Feb, though she didn't come to me until Good Friday. I noticed the wheeze & took her to the vet on the Sat. though we couldn't hear a wheeze then, so I have no idea how long she has had it.

She is bright alert eats well,no sniffles, coughs no runny nose or eyes and hobbles about with her short leg, is probably tad lardy and does rest lots with her friend the disabled girl.

She breathes very heavily even and perhaps more at rest.

I have orego stim in the water & citricidal in other bowls, (they have time in a grass run & freeranging and disabled girl always has food/water with her! so put it in there)

Any sugestions anyone?

sounds like you are doing everything right, um you might have tried this already but if you have a look around her nostrils for any sign of dust or anything which could be from dusty wood shaving in the house if you use them, or if you look down her throat you might see if it is blocked or swollen, but oter than that i am not really sure soryy. hope she gets better though

I found that when Mango had egg peritonitis, she filled up with fluid. This put pressure on her air sacs to the degree that you could see her breathing, especially when she was roosting or trying to dust bath.

I'm sad to say that I didn't think it fair on her to be struggling so for breath when she was at rest, so we decided to have her put to sleep.

If it's an infection and the antibiotics are working, she should show signs of improvement soon. If not, I'd take her back to the vet to see if there's anything else he can give you.

Good luck with your little lady
