Broody? help please.

Recommended Posts

I think one of my girls has gone broody. I am not too bothered if she has (might get some fertilised eggs, not decided yet) I just need to check that it is this, and not something else.

She is not coming off the nest, or the eggs (boy! they do keep warm dont they?) and she makes a gentle, squeeky trilling noise when I collect the eggs or open the egg port to check on her.

No other signs or symptoms that I can see/note.

So, if she HAS gone broody, what can I do to A) get her out of it or B)make the most of it (fertilised eggs...)

Sounds like it to me  . I don't know about the hatching eggs side of it, but if you want her to snap out of it you can do a few things.

Keep kicking her off the nestbox and try to close the door (if the others have laid).

Put a brick or a freeze pack (wrapped up) in the nestbox.

Dunk her rear end in a bucket of cool water.

Put her in a broody cage (puppy crate) for anything up to 3 days (one day worked for me as I caught her early).

Thanks ANH, She has been sat there all day and the two eggs that were laid after we went out this morning were still roasty toasty warm when I collected them.

I've made water and food available to her, and stuck a rubber egg under her for tonight as a friend might have some eggs to hatch (she has the heat lamps etc for after) so I said I could let Amy have a sit on them if she does. She is going to get back to me tomorrow. If she doesnt then I will probably do the turfing out/cooling down thing, it would be a waste of Amy's time and energy to sit otherwise.

my cream legbar, henrietta has gone broody too.....this is her first spring.. :-( I've jsut read the advice, she is bock bocking at me, fluffing up her feathers, pulling out some to line the nest, and refusing to budge from her laid egg, and her sisters....

I was despairing as to what to do, but now I suspect some cold water may be coming her way....

I'd love to hatch some eggs, *****ooooh the tempatation**** but I know I dont have the room for them :-(

thank goodness for this forum !!! my books only told me how to get her to hatch some eggs :-)

best of luck with your eggs :):):):):):)
