leopardstar
I'm putting some eggs under my broody pekin because I can't stop her being broody so thought I may as well go with it!!! At what age can the chicks be seperated from the mother? I was going to put her in a rabbit hutch to sit on the eggs, would that be suitable? Daphne
Just think about what you are going to do with the boys that will inevitably hatch before you do actually go ahead with this. Its hard to rehome them. Your broody will be OK in a rabbit hutch, assuming its safe from predators, but remember she will need room to get off the eggs to eat/poo/stretch her legs. When the chicks are litttle they will need safe space to toddle about in with mum. Mum will probably be ready to leave them around 6 weeks ish. Egluntyne
The broody will stay with the chicks for 5-6 weeks. I agree with Daphne,it is a good idea have a plan in place for any boys, be it for the pot or a new home.
The Dogmother
Around 6 weeks (the mum is uaually fed up with them by then anyway), although I haven't split any up before, just let them drift off when they wanted. It's best to leave them with her as long as you can.
