Janty
Just had my order confirmed...one male and six female quail. They are hatching daily at the breeders and she has several colours of coturnix to choose from. Should be about four to six weeks.
Chickvic
Oooh - don't forget to post pics. Where are you keeping them?
Janty
In a rablu within the new run. I am going to pad the top of the rablu run so that they don't bang their heads.
Chickvic
Do they insist on jumping?
Janty
Like little harrier jump jets.
Lewis
Have you had quail before? They do jump, but out of the 11 I've had, only 1 of the cockerels does it. You might want to cover around the bottom of the run with more mesh, as they tend to stick their heads through the bars, and any local cats may see it as a meal
Janty
I have had quail before...they escaped last year when something tried to dig into their run. This time they will be in the rablu that I got from ebay and the rablu will be inside the walk in run for added protection.

I though you had, Did you have a problem with a cat biting ones head off, or am I getting confused?
Janty
No, it wasn't us with the cat problem. We thought it must have been a fox but there were no feathers and we haven't had any problems since so we assumed that a cat must have tried to dig it's way in and then they escaped. Lesley
We had rats that burrowed under ours and saw the quail as a Take Away So we put a mesh floor in.........but the rats burrowed and terrorised the quail so we then resorted to a concrete slab - no more problems.......but it's not my favourite type of floor for them, it is covered with Aubiose though. All ours are girls now - and they still 'boing' almost to the roof of the walk in aviary Just a thought Janty - if the rabbit hutch is inside your WIR, will you have a problem with hens perching on top of it? Janty
I might do. Will re-position it if I need to. Thanks for that.
Lesley
We made a sectioned area within our WIR for a broody hen sitting on eggs. We have two Eglus to a protection pen - on the outside - we put half an Eglu run on the inside so that she was isolated from, but still with, the other hens. They perched on the top and pooed all over the little chicks We had to make a floor to ceiling amendment with chicken wire netting
