LaPoule
As if I really didn't have enough on my plate....RANT RANT RANT I thought we had a Northern Fowl Mite Infestation, and have been diligently treating with loads of stuff, as advised by Claret (see sticky at top of Clinic section) as Picasso had greasy vent feathers and dry skin. However, I'm not entirely sure that NFM is the problem (I will continue treatment for at least 2 weeks anyway, just in case), as I have noticed Picasso gets wet vent feathers. I have noticed today that water is coming from her vent! She has normal poos too (the joys of chickenhood...), though they are a bit squishy, but I noticed that the vent feathers were wet, without being dirty (which would be the case if she had diarrhoea), but then when I was giving them some corn today, I heard a distinct splash and there was warm wet thin liquid on the ground - pretty much like water! Few bits in it, but really not much! She is her normal happy self, lays a tiny egg every day, eats, makes that funny whiny noise she makes... I am confused beyond belief - what IS this?! I even gave her vent a sniff (hmmm...), but just smelt like normal chicken. Should we get some boakshi for her? Take her to the vet? It's probably been going on for a while, but as I thought it was the NFM, I didn't make the connection until the splash sound today! Egluntyne
Have they been wormed? If not, I'd give them a course of Flubenvet. Bokashi bran and probiotic yoghurt are excellent for sorting out squitty poos too, but if there is an underlying worm infestation, it is best to sort that out. LaPoule
Thanks Egluntine. They were all wormed with Flubenvet about a month ago, and then last week they were all treated with Xeno200 for the possible NFM on the advice of the vet. As I understand it, this is treats worms too - so they should be clear. Hmmm
The Dogmother
Xeno isn't a really good, borad spectrum wormer. Flubenvet is pretty, or Panacur 10% small animal soultion *not licenced for use on poultry in the UK* is excellent, but you'll need to withdraw the eggs if using the latter. Incidentally, I was chatting to my excellent chicken vet about this and while Ivomec Eprinex (cattle pour-on) *not licenced for use on poultry in the UK* will treat mites as well as lice, Xeno 200, which only contains Ivermectin only treats lice. That's what he says anyway.
LaPoule
Well, Picasso's tummy troubles have continued to come and go. We wormed, and used bokashi and yoghurt but these made no difference. I wondered if it might be related to some of the additives in the food (garlic, limestone flour etc.). So we cut out everything and have gradually been re-introducing items, one by one. She appears to be allergic to the garlic powder! Odd, but true. I also had some Verm-X liquid I wanted to use up, so added this to the water, and the watery poo came back. Of course, when I checked, I realised the first ingredient is garlic! Does anyone else have chickens with allergies?!?!
Olly
Not that I know of! Glad you worked out the cause, anyway.
