Tobysmum
Hi folks - I've just joined this morning. I've kept hens for over seven years, I keep a range of pure breed and hybrid hens. I am involved in ex-battery hen rescue and I hope it is OK for me to mention that Hen Rehomers UK are holding their next rescue on 6th June 2009. There are still a number of hens available to rehome, we certainly do not want them going to slaughter, so could I please appeal to anyone seriously interested in rehoming ex-battery hens to visit our website www.henrehomers.net and complete an application form. These hens make lovely pets, they are very endearing little ladies who have lovely personalities. Give a little bit of TLC they soon blossom into beautiful hens. Thank you for reading this. peggotty
Hi, nice to hear from you - I was not aware of hen rehomers. I have had a look at the website and really like the attitude it takes to rehoming policy. I would only consider rescue hens, and this forum seems to be full of ex-batt friendly souls, so maybe some of your girls will appear on here in the future. (Or have already?!) Tobysmum
Thank you for your kind words, Peggotty! Yes, I am sure some of the ex-battery hens we have rehomed over the past year may be living with people who are part of the Eglu forum. I have certainly liaised with a number of rehomers who have purchased Eglu's for their ex-battery hens. I know from our next rescue on 6th - I've got two people who are awaiting delivery of their eglu's any day now!
mrsallen08
Hello! I have 3 exbatts from Hen Rehomers! And my neighbour has another 3! Lovely birds now and full of fun! And great layers too which is always a bonus! I have put my name down to help with future rescues too as although I can't really have many more hens I want to do my bit for such a good cause! Good luck with the rescue!
pinkmagic
I adopted 2 hens from hen rehomers from the January rescue. Henny penny and Ugly Betty have settled in well. Henny Penny has completely feathered up now she is extremely tame and loves a cuddle. Ugly Betty was in a much worse state than Henny Penny when she arrived and is not quite so tame and still has some feathering up to do although she is a totally different bird to when she arrived. Unfortunately can't take any more as just no room, but keep up the good work.
Tobysmum
Fantastic to hear about your ex-battery hens, folks. Thanks for that, it is good to know that your hens have settled in. mrsallen08, well done for volunteering! I think it is very fulfilling helping get these lovely little chooks out of cages and into loving, permanent homes.
kelschooks
Hi there, Nice to hear of another rescue organisation flying the flag for ex-bats! Last June we got 4 from the BHWT. Sadly we lost one a few weeks ago to EYP but they have been wonderful and so rewarding to keep. Even though it was sad when we lost Maisy I felt so pleased knowing that she had been able to be a proper chicken for almost a year and had the chance to peck, scratch and sunbathe We are getting 3 more in 10 days time from the huge rescue the Little Hen rescue are undertaking in Norfolk. Really looking forward to it but a bit unsure how the integrating will go. Wish me luck! Kelly x
mostin
Hi Tobysmum, great to hear that someone from hen rehomers is on here. I got my ex-batts from your charity less than a month ago on the 2nd May, and they have been an endless delight to be since they arrived . If anyone is even contemplating it, please do it. It is so rewarding, and my little girls are blossoming by the day.
dancing cloud
I hadn't heard of this organisation (my 9 are BHWT) and it's good to know they are out there. I'm full at the moment, but having checked out the info on their website, I would certainly be happy to adopt from them . All the best for your June rescue and hope you find homes for everyone. mrsallen08
After only posting on here the other day I am now the collection home for Derbyshire! I am very excited about the hwole rescue, even a little nervous about seeing 2500 hens being rescued. Look forward to meeting other hen-lovers on the day! Peaches
Hi, Tobysmum I'm collecting some ex-batts from Hen Rehomers next weekend. Although, like Kelly, I'm suddenly worried about integrating with my 3 ex-batts who I've had for 6 weeks. In fact, the last couple of nights I've had mad panic about it all - is this normal???
