We are heading to central Brittany again this year for our hols. But I want to be prepared for all eventualities - we went 2 years ago and it rained solidly for a fortnight. I know the weather there can be unpredictable, but we went the same week that there were those floods in Yorkshire! So hopefully it will be a little better this time! We will be very central - near Rostrenen, but does anyone have any good places to visit (for shopping, parks, gardens, sights etc), or know the best beaches (just in case we do get a scorcher?)

Oooh I like holidays in Brittany There is such a wide selection of places to visit, will trawl through and see which beaches we liked best, places to visit are the area called Green Venice (I think ) Lots of canals etc. but can be a bit short on shade in very hot weather, Le Puy du Fou is well worth a trip, get there early and watch the shows they are breath taking especially for children. There are trips to the Glennan Isles, like a tropical island of the coast of Brittany. We went to the Island of Noirmoutier with it's sea salt production. We didn't find a bad beach, but always travelled out of the towns first so they were much quieter. There are lots of historical towns too like Carnac and Concarneau.

 

It's a lovely area and you'll have a great time

I will dig out our maps and find the beautiful uncrowded beaches we went to(we were glad not to stay in the main resort areas) .

 

We visited the horse breeding centre for the big war horses..have amnesia? cant remember the name!! That was nice..beautiful horses nice place and town nearby.

Oooh, thankyou both, directions needed please! Last time we went we spent far too much time traipsing round trying to find nice places - the Rostrennen area is lovely, but remote so everywhere worth visiting is a bit of a hike. We need to be able to go straight too places!

Karen - isn't Green Venice in the Vendee? - lower down than Brittany, near La Rochelle. That's where we went last year - staying just up the road from Marans

 

We have toured all around the coastline of Brittany but it was some time ago...........I'll see if anything comes back to me.

hi we went to visit carnac which is where lots of friends stayed with small children but although it had a beach it was crowded and not our thing. we stayed in a mill house in the area of morbihan(I was glad we gave carnac a miss it was crowded)!

 

Just looking at a map above north of Lorient were some lovely beaches which most had a cafe but parking was free all along the coast and the beaches were wide and safe. lots of families(it was like britain with free parking years ago..we couldnt believe it). Lorient was a nice town to see but we did do car park as it was old and historic centre

 

Malachap and le poulau ring a bell but probably best to look it up. The beaches were recommended by the mill owner and it was the summer that was baking hot. We could buy cold drinks and ice cream etc and it was great

 

The horse centre was the Breton horses, we went to see.

Carnac is wonderful if you you like history/archaeology. We went (eek, was it that long?!) about 20 years ago, before we got married and before children. I was working in archaeology at the time, so it was high on my list of things to see.

May not be so interesting if you have small children though.

We did go to a wonderful burial chamber on an island, that you get to by boat, called Ile de Gavrinis in the Gulf of Morbihan. It's a huge megalithic cairn with heavily decorated carved stones along the chamber passage, in a linear design, like huge finger-prints. It's one of the most stunning things I've ever seen.

Thanks Indie. We were recommended Lorient last time and drove out that way - it's about the nearest resort to where we are staying. I think we went too far west and missed the beaches Plus the weather was lousy. We ended up in Quimper in the pouring rain. Would be lovely to go there again - in slightly better weather! Looks like we will be heading back to Lorient though!

 

And thanks Sam - Carnac sounds good as well! Missed it last time.

It's quite a hike from where you are to Carnac but if you do get down to that part of the world Auray ( not the new town but the old port - I think it may be called St Augustin but don't hold me to that..anyway just next to Auray) and Vannes are both worth a visit . Also we were in Crozon a couple of years ago and there were some quite good beaches and great scenery around that area...and down towards Douarnennez. ...I'm quite envious cos my kids don't want to go on holiday with us now... I'm sure you'll have a lovely time whatever, and hope we will see some pics when you get back!
