I think my chooks are institutionalized !

Recommended Posts

I have my 6 original girls in their WIR (group1 )and an adjoining WIR for the 7 newer chooks(group2). When it's free range time I let group 1 our first and they go haring off up the garden, then I go down the path and let group 2 out. Muppet, Mabel, Favvie and Doris are all agrophobic  they'll toddle as far as the gate, but no further, they don't want to leave their run. Ozzy, Welly and Nora on the other hand go hurtling out, down the path and ....straight into group 1's WIR :o and that is where they'll spend the majority of their playtime ! it's so amusing to watch, you can imagine them saying ' I'M going in their dustbath, you have a go on their perches Welly, make sure you try them all' - Ozzy will even make herself at home in their nestbox and lay an egg ! They'll potter around in the run for hours - not even deterred when members of group 1 come back and raise holyhell because of the intruders !! It's not as if they don't know the garden is there - they will go in it if I shoo them out the run and close the gate, but they just prefer the run, so are they institutionalized or are they just being cheeky ?

Can we see pictures of your walk in run?

Im going to have to build my own in the next month or so to accomadate the new chicks and the older girls- so want to see some ideas!

Thanks!

it takes me forever to upload/resize photos etc - must have a couple of hundred photos on my xD card awaiting attention :o

Both WIR have several perches at various heights and of various thicknesses ( to suit a silkie or orpington ! :D ) both have an old wooden chair that started out as my chicken watcching chair, but have now been taken over by the chooks, the new run has an old wooden coffee table to perch on or hide under ( it's lovely and dark under there- and impossible to be reached when someones' trying to drag you out for a dusting with mite powder  ) I've also made another higher platform with a ramp leading up to it, both runs have dustbaths. In fact I'd say group 2's run is more desirable.

I think my chooks have just got a wicked sense of humour, I'm sure I can hear them giggling as play in group 1's run - bit like kids sneaking into dads office to play with the stapler and paper punch and leave naughty words on the Pc :lol:
