From a lash to softees and one white rough coated shelled egg we have nothing from this hen and she is crouching like mad and i was really worried - picked her up tonight and she is moulting underneath so I think thats what the problem has been and have seen the odd feather but not like the other one did - Hopefully she will recover again as she is just over 1 year and 5 months

That's interesting . Milly is the only one of mine who is still laying softies and I've seen a few of her feathers around in the run. None of them have ever moulted yet so maybe that's what's going on .

Yes I had seen a few but not many feathers going about and did wonder but did not pick her up since I did her bottom and dosed her and checked her over. I had another white rough coated shelled egg to-day so must be a mini moult me thinks. One of the others moulted before xmas and was almost oven ready!!.

 

 

Maybe check her underneath - henrietta was quite bald - will keep checking her - I was actually looking to see if she was swollen and had egg peritonitis?

It may be that the heat is making her start to think of going broody. She'll then pull out her breast feathers to better incubate eggs.

 

A moult usually starts at the neck and works down.

She has a few quills which look new and are coming in but her breast bone is bare but not sitting in nest like a broody at all.

2 girls laid lovely eggs in the nestbox to-day and I found them covered in a softee egg which had been wolfed and some bits of soft shell - blast it all.

She of the softee fame is also taking to going under my hosta and making a nest but she is not broody with it so I am at a loss
