Beaches in Dorset

Recommended Posts

we used to have a beach hut at Southbourne, we loved it there although it can get quite busy. Have you considered that area as you can get the land train from Hengistbury car park out onto hengistbury head which is FAB. I dont know how far the land train runs these days but it used to run along most of the seafront bournemouth/boscombe and I think it linked to the Hengistbury head one ....best to ring tourist office to check details as it did vary from year to year..... if that appeals

Two beaches that are not wheelchair friendly but absolutely fantastic are Kimmeridge and Durdle Door. To get to both you need to trek down the cliffs and once there there are no loos or any sevices but it is worth it!

Kimmeridge is flat expances of sheet shale rock (take shoes as the black rock gets very hot!) that has swimming pool sized rock pools when the tide is out. Durdle Door is a pebble beach with fantastic views of the door which is a huge natural arch. Well worth the haul down then back up the cliff.

Well . . . . we tried to go to the beach. All packed up, got the fuel, forgot the towels, went home and picked them up. Had a lovely drive through the New Forest. Ony to get there and the first three car parks were full :( So with three very disappointed kids we went to Bolderwood for a picnic and played boules, frisbee and generally hung out and had ice cream. We are going to go to Sandbanks tomorrow afternoon for a walk and a bit of a dip so I am hoping every one else has gone home. Or at least most people so we can park!

ps my hubby and I went to Kimmeridge before we got married. I don't think I'd be happy taking the kids there as some of the ledges along the cliff are very teeny. But that said it is a great place. Quite spooky I thought.
