iwannachicken
Don't know if this is a stupid question, but as Hybrids are generally bred for egg laying do they start earlier than a pure breed chicken? I suposse i am asking because we have a light sussex who is older than our red star and black rock and she hasn't started laying yet,she is about 24 weeks old but our red star is only 18weeks old but has started laying. I'm not really bothered when they start laying but just wondered whether it depends on the type of chicken or just the chicken it's self. Thanks in advance. ubereglu
Pure Breeds do start laying later than hybrids do. My barnevelder didn't start to lay until she was about 35 weeks old, whereas hybrids start to lay at about 20 weeks. Pure breeds will finish laying earlier on in the year than hybrids do, but pure breeds tend to lay for longer in terms of years.
chelsea
Ubereglu is right. Pure breeds do take longer to mature, especially some of the heavier fancy breeds, my cochins were about 9 months or so before they produced their first

Samuel Morse
iwannachicken, my two Light Sussex started laying this week and are about 27 weeks old. There was none of the crouching business that some have mentioned. S

She was 14 weeks old when we got her on April 14th! Good job they are all different - it would be boring otherwise!

S Ours did the crouching thing,so was hoping it was only a matter of time and she laid her first egg a week or so ago and so far has not missed a day. Which i think is good going?!
