helenp
Hi, I have a WIR and I am considering extending it. What is the best height for the fencing? We were thinking 6ft would be ok, & should we cover the top of the run with bird netting?
moochoo
6ft should be fine. Most chickens find it hard to clear that sort of height. It wouldn't hurt to mesh the top though, foxes can easily scale a 6ft fence to get in.
Budgies
I too would put a weldmesh lid on the top of your run as a fox will easily overcome netting. Don't forget that DEFRA say they should be covered so wild birds can't poo in the run and so spread disease. With the mesh you can always drape a tarp or similar over the top for at least part of it, and bungee it to the sides.
Ness3103
definitely put a roof on if you can, mine's 6ft and my speckledy launched herself and almost got over the top we've got the roof on now, she tried again but once she'd bumped her head, she gave up
Carol U
I too would definitely put a roof on. Corrugated plastic can be bought quite cheaply. As for height, my bluebelle once made it to the apex of the greenhouse, which is 8'6", and she is a big bird. However, with a roof, you needn't worry about height. Ness3103
i got my corrugated plastic from wickes, it was just over £6 a sheet, it was cheaper than b&q
