Falkor
Hi All! My splash Orp Gin started limping on Thursday evening and we thought it was because she tripped over the edge of the raised bed on her sprint to get at the corn OH was throwing on the lawn. She is still limping today albeit not as pronounced. I have had a look and feel of her legs and the limping leg is no hotter than her other one bit does look a little swollen on top of her foot (where she caught the edge of the bed). I was working on the basis that it was a sprain and if no improvment we would pop to the vets on Mon/Tues for some Anti-inflam drugs. BUT the last two mornings when i have been out to let them out of the cube she has looked out of the door and then made her way to the nest box but has not laid. I have had sneaky peek this morning whilst she was in the nest box and she seems to be sitting just like she would when she was laying. But after twenty mins or so she is back out of the cube and carrying on about her business as normal. I am a little concerned that the limp and no egg may be a sign that she is calcium deficient. Could the two be linked? I have sourced some Zocal D (?) online that should help but wondered if there is anything else I should be doing in the meantime? I want to take her out of the cube and keep her on ground level to rest her leg and I can do this by popping her into the guinlu run within the WIR but as my is out on loan I only have a cat box for housing. Will this be ok? Or am I being extreme?
Daphne
Hi - I wouldn't have thought the leg/egg issue was lack of calcium given what you said about a possible physical cause for the limp and the symptoms. She may have stopped laying as she's feel a bit out of sorts with the leg. If she was egg bound you would notice her being quiet, standing about with tail down. Getting her on an even surface is a good idea to speed up the healing. Jumping about won't be the best thing for the leg - we know what heffalumps orps are! However, it really depends on a) whether you feel your cat cage is big/safe enough and b) whether you think she'll be OK in it for a few nights away from her friends. It might be that you think the comfort/safety issues are less good options than using the ladder. I think I'd watch and wait and take a view on the vet early next week. Falkor
Ta Daphne! Her tail isn`t down and other than the limp there is nothing noticably different. She is chomping on brocoli as I type! The guinlu run and cat box are within my walk-in-run so I know that she will be secure but as you say it is the question of being away from her friends. I am concerned that she will get depressed or *opps word censored** off with being in there. For the time being I have added a flower pot and log to the base of the cube ladder to help but as you say there is nothing dainty about Orps and she tends to just get half way down the ladder and almost belly flop to the ground I will keep an eye on her I think I just saw the nestbox trips and no egg yesterday and let me mind run away with me
Cooks
thats allowed! We all worry Em, like I said on the phone I wouldn't want to lay an egg if I had a poorly leg either
Cooks
how is she today Em?
Falkor
She seems a lot better. I have kept them shut in the WIR for the last two days and this seems to have rested her sore leg/foot. She is still limping a bit but no where near as much. No eggs though for three days Although I did find some yolk mixed in with the Aubiose but that could be from a previous softie we had a few days ago. Redwing
Hi Em, I can't help with the hurt leg but just wanted to say my new is currently empty if you want to borrow it?
Falkor
Thanks Tasha!! But I am surprised that you have managed to Rodney empty for so long! Been to Thornes yet? Gin seems to be a lot better this morning.......still being carful with the leg but she is def able to bear more weight on it (and being a greedy orp that is a fair bit of weight!) I will check on her tonight when I get back from work and if she is still limping I will take you up on your offer as it will have been four days now.
