toonfamily
I think our hens have finally settled in and have got to grips with the way our family works. This morning they heard me open the patio doors and ran to the end of their run and made so much noise to come out. At first I said no as I was going to work and the OH was doing the school run. but after more hen noise I opened the door for a cuddle. And while i was doing the deed, the other 2 ran past me in their bid for freedom. It was really funny. They then needed to be rounded up. our youngest son was then caught with one of the Bantam chicks - he said he was taking his new friend to playschool, so he went to school in a mood as i wouldn't let him. And to top the mad 5 mins off - our Greyhound Alfie (A Rescued dog) decided that whilst I was rounding up the girls he would crawl into thier Eglu run and eat up all the vegetable s"Ooops, word censored!"s i had put in there. ( It was funny seeing a huge Greyhound stuck in the run. The mad thing) I am really enjoying having them in the garden. still no eggs but lots of fun. I'm having the afternoon off work to spend with them free ranging. The Power of the Hen hey!!
milwichchickenlover
Ah, don't let them walk all over you! I've just let mine out because they all stood by the gate looking pathetic and making a racket. Ignore them if you are in a hurry - don't feel guilty they will soon forget what they were whingeing about. I will now have to spend the best part of the evening running round the garden trying to get them back in. They can be very stubborn you know! It is such a lot of fun though, don't know what I did with my spare time before my babies came along!

littlehenny
I swear mine can hear my key in the front door, and by the time i'm in the kitchen they are pushing and shoving each other out of the way to get near the run door! When I do let them out they run past me for freedom (and worms!) without a mention of 'thank you'! Err, who do you think is running my home?? emmamakeup
Mine make such a racket when I open the door. They can even see me watching them from the kitchen. I feel awful when I don't let them out when I'm in the garden to take out the rubbish or put washing out. They know when I'm opening their run door and it's like they quarrel at who's going to get out first. When they've free ranged for a bit they are quite happy to go back in their run, have a feast on their pellets and then cuddle up together in the run. toonfamily
I got my greyhound from an animal sanctuary nr Coalville, Leicestershire. I think he wasn't very good at running and had been beaten severely. he was covered in scars and was bald due to lying on cold concrete. He is lovely though. Very Lazy and an absolute pig. He eats till he is sick so I can't leave food out. So the chickens are fighting for the s"Ooops, word censored!"s lol. The Hens came into the house tonight. sat on the kitchen table. and one dozed off. hilarious. The kids stopped cooing at them when they pooed everywhere and had to clean it up. I am loving it. Not enough hours in the day really...
badgerbluebadger
My girls are the same but you have to be firm with them otherwise you will not have a garden left if they free range all the time! Would love to see the pictures of your animals please!

jenniewren76
Oh yes mine do this too. They have found an ingenious way to get out they all stand on the glug and grub till they fall off then I have to refill the water and they all try to make a break for it. I don't have an Eglu or cube but have the glugs on some strong steel rod I even have trouble getting it off to refil it!!! Do any of your Glugs fall off? from what I've seen they look as secure as mine
toonfamily
mine have not fallen off. though they do look like they could. I think they are designed for the run so it is secure. its amazing that the hens are so ingenious and now how to get the upper hand.
*mummy_hen*
I am weak with mine also....although nothing makes me happier than when they were all free ranging around the garden so i guess i didn't really feel i had been that hard done by!!
