tidygirlsuk
Hello Little henny D, Chickens are lovely pets. I have nine of them, one is a cockerel and the other eight are girls. How long have you had yours ?
littlehenny
I love my chickens, and I really would like to get more but we don't have the room. We have had our 3 girls for just over a year and they have been sooo much fun!! Chicken keeping has become my number one hobby - is that sad?! PS How do you all do your 'sign offs' with details about your chooks etc? I keep typing in the same info every time, ie: Martha Tulip Lily Can I save this info to use every time? Sorry for being a bit new to all this!! LittlehennyM
Space Chick
Hi LittlehennyD! Its not sad at all, chickens are my number one hobby too My favourite is Donna (even though she hasn't laid yet), she's so affectionate, and I am convinced she says thankyou when you let her out to free-range! To have to bits on the end, you need to make a signature in the user control panel. However, the pictures on the left don't show, so I'd write it in a message then copy it, and paste it in the signature. Hope this makes sense! Good luck, and happy chickens. littlehenny
That is so funny K-F-C!! LittlehennyD is in year 6 and goes to a fantastic school that has a really forward thinking head. Over the past few years they have worked so hard as a school to firstly get the land and secondly to create an allotment for each year to tend and then reap the rewards. Often there is so much excess crop that they can sell it to parents to enjoy. Also they take seedlings for us to buy - last year we had some fab cucumber plants from the allotment which yielded some fantastic fruit! Soo, now is the time to try to persuade the head that keeping chickens would be a fab addition to a very successful project. I have mentioned it to her and D has printed out loads of info from the Omlet school section, but so far to little effect. Don't know quite how to move forward from here -any ideas?! atsw
So, now is the time to try to persuade the head that keeping chickens would be a fab addition to a very successful project. I have mentioned it to her and D has printed out loads of info from the Omlet school section, but so far to little effect. Don't know quite how to move forward from here -any ideas?! You could start off with a project to hatch some eggs in an incubator. Would need quite a bit of forward planning (i.e. what to do with the chicks once hatched), but other schools seem to manage it very well. There was a post about it earlier today in the "Hatching and Raising Chicks" section. Andrew
littlehenny
Thanks atsw and DebsL - I think I've finally done It!! I may be able to look after 3 chooks, 2 cats & 2 children, but computers challenge me!! Still, a computer will never be as fun as the chooks, cats and ... (perhaps!) the kids!! That sounds great... I am just getting our school into the grow your own thing! MY year groups partner and I have planted loads in tubs with our classes and have just convinced the head to get us some raised beds! I think the best way to convince a head of anything has to be to by stressing the educational value and highlight what the children will be learning and also the PSHE aspect... also tell them about all the fantastic chicken poo that they will get to put on their allotments! Another tip is to convince as many people of the ideas, so try and get some teachers on your side and some members of the PA or governors so that they can 'peck' the head's head!
