*mummy_hen*
I really need to invest in a sewing machine but i'm a complete novice and don't really know what i'm looking for. I want an electric one that i can use for general arts and crafts so won't need anything too fancy! Is a sewing machine a sewing machine?? Or is it a case you get what you pay for? I was hoping not to spend too much money, is that unrealistic? Had a look in the local trade it and there were even a couple for free but i don't want anything naf or too complicated to use!! Any help would be very greatly received!!!
Aunty e
I'd get yourself a reboxed machine like a Janome or a Brother from an online retailer OR sometimes one of the super-cheap shops (is it Lidl?) have them and they are very good I hear. http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4602198/Trail/searchtext>SEWING+MACHINE.htm This one from Argos seems fine to me, and will come with a year guarantee of course. If you don't mind going online then this brother is a nice machine to use http://www.sewingmachinediscount.co.uk/discount-day/brother/ls2125/123-c60-v0.htm Don't be afraid to pick one up for free, just make sure that it's a brother, singer, janome or a jones, as they're really standard, and you can get it serviced at a shop for £20 and it will work forever. Of course, you can go super-cheap and get yourself a Janome mini - they're available from John Lewis for £50, but you can get them online and on ebay for around £30. I have one for carting about to theatres and for when my main sewing machine breaks down, and while it sews a little slower than my big boy, it works a treat and is so simple to use and takes up no space. If you're not planning on doing quilting or anything like that, there's no reason not to get one, I've made whole frocks on mine, and most of the rompers in my thread were churned out by the Mini. Plum
I'm looking for one for workshops so it's interesting to see what is recommended. I think the one Snowy recommends on the other thread is worth considering but a bit heavier so will keep it on the table.
