Dispatched our first two chickens

Recommended Posts

Well, the deed has been done.

On Monday, DH and his friend dispatched two of our dinner chickens.

We plucked the same day then kept him in the fridge until Tues lunchtime, when DH dressed him. He was a good size, not huge, but will make 4 meals for the 2 of us (8 meals in total).

He was delicious. A very chickeny taste, but not as overpoweringly flavoured as the one we had last year when we did our course (he left for the traditional 3 days before dressing).

DH's friend dressed his on Monday, and also had him for dinner last night. His wife refused to eat any of it (although she is a meat eater who regularly eats chicken). I find that really strange, as she's normally a very sensible woman; and it's not as if she hasn't been down to see the birds or got involved in the rearing, the first time she saw the bird it was dressed and gutted and looked like any other chicken you'd buy from a butcher.

Well done Hazel - I'm glad he tasted good! :D

......and your friends OH needs a good slap!! vegetarian and vegan views I am fine with - I was vegetarian for 25 years and still only eat our own meat - but meat eaters who won't eat meat raised in that way make me mad. I have a friend who won't eat animals we have reared......so we just don't invite her for a meal anymore

Gosh, how rude of your friend!

Actually,I think one of my brothewrs would be like that. He pulls ill looking faces when we talk about our dinner chickens. I don@t mean when we talk about slaughtering them, i mean when we make any mention of ythem. He refused to come and see them as well!

Maybe i'll doroast chicken next time he comes to dinner.

He's also a bit weird. He doesn't like home made bread he likes shop bought white which "stays fresh". And he doesn't like home made jam as it tastes too fruity.

We must introduce him to a 'friend' of ours who isn't keen on my girls eggs because they taste too.....eggy.
