Miso's died

Recommended Posts

Miso had recovered from her wounded vent which was fully healed (albeit with a slight chink on the edge). However she hadn't laid since the day we took her to the vet. This was fine as she was healing, going through a moult and was on anti-biotics. She started eating well when the a/bs finished and we expected that her laying would come back in its own time when she was through her moult and had eaten normally for a while.

A few days ago she looked like she was moving towards laying a egg so we monitored her carefully. Wednesday she was in the eglu during the day & we wondered if she was going to go broody. Thursday evening she was definately presenting as egg-bound, but it couldn't be reached ...it was too high up. We got the last appointment at the vet & saw the same vet again (who used to keep bantams). He discovered that the egg was stuck in her oviduct! He tried but couldn't shift it. After discussion he suggested an injection of calcium and a contraction stimulant to try to nudge it down. This has a good result normally but we knew the egg was high up. If this didn't work by the morning it was agreed the best thing was to put her to sleep.

We took her home and she was in the heater cupboard in a box to keep her warm. She started to show signs of more active contractions. This morning she was dead. She just couldn't do it.

What we have decided is that, if we have this happen to another hen, we will put it to sleep as a first option. We wouldn't want to put another hen through this. We hope this is helpful to others.
