skye has just stood in front of me and laid her first egg the only trouble is it's broken inside her and the shell is poking out of her vent. i'm not sure what to do she doesn't seem too bothered and is stuffing her face will i pass on its own or do i need to do something

Oh dear . I think if you can pull it out easily I would try it. You need to be careful that nothing's left inside though, I think . Sorry, I've no experience of this so hopefully someone else will see this and respond.

it sort of disappeared back inside her and now she's gone to bed. really don't know what to do now

Keep an eye on her, but she will probably pass it in the morning. You could grab her and give her a bit of gentle assistance.

 

The thing to watch out for is the other hens pecking at it.

My hen Endora had a similar problem a couple of weeks ago she passed the inside of an egg in front of me I was really worried that some was left inside but the day after she was behaving normally eating and drinking well walking around as usual then late that afternoon she passed the broken shell and laid a normal egg the day after! Hopefully she will be fine, its a good sign that she doesnt seem bothered and is eating well so fingers crossed

thanx sara-w i've just let them out of the eglu and she seems fine. no sign of the egg shell so hopefully she'll pass it later. i've got a good excuse to sit and do some chook watching today now

skye passed the shell this afternoon it was so soft so all my worrying about her having a hard broken shell inside her was for nothing she's been in and out of the eglu all day so hopefully she'll lay the next one in there
