Romany
I know there have been various posts on here about Tylan and egg withdrawal... but can't find anything recent and wondering if anyone has any new ideas... My vet has given me Tylan Soluble for a respiratory infection in one of my hens, with advice to trreat the whole flock. Obviously I keep chickens for eggs... but the label quite clearly states NOT for use in layers producing eggs for human consumption! This warning is repeated on the manufacturers website. But I have also come across several documents and tables on the internet saying that there is no egg-withdrawal period... which seems contradictory. One of these docs was from a .gov web address: www.vmd.gov.uk/espcsite/Documents/140142.DOC So I'm feeling confused... and don't know whether to treat or not! My hens haven't even started laying yet! 4 are POL and 4 are 12 weeks old. It seems commonly used as a drug here on the forum. And another form of Tylan Pre-mix is OK for layers and used to increase feed:eggs ratio! It's the same drug - tylosin just that one is tylosin phosphate and one is tylosin tartrate. Any one know why the tartrate would be so bad that you can't eat eggs from chickens who have been treated with it?!
Egluntyne
If they aren't laying, the egg withdrawal shouldn't be an issue. The maximum margin for error is 28 days after the course has finished, so given their age, they are unlikely to come into lay before that is up. I'd treat them if they were my girls. Romany
One vet I spoke to said that it stays in the system 'indefinately'! Which I found pertubing but also a little hard to believe... anyway, started treating them this morning...
Chucky Mama
I would contact the VMD and find out from them. They are the guys that regulate all UK medicines.
The Dogmother
I've always been told to withdraw eggs fro 7 days from last dose. Best to check though.
Romany
I had a long chat this morning with my local vet, after he went and researched as much as he could, and we came to the conclusion that it should be fine but to be safe then wait a week or two after last dose. Eggs start their life 10 days before being laid though, so I think I'm going to wait a further 10 days after that because I have young children and am paranoid!! Thanks for your help! Romany
Oh and guess what... I got my first blinkin' today!!!!!! Out of the whole flock... of all the days to start a course of Tylan... if only she'd laid it BEFORE I gave them their water this morning... then I could have at least had the first special egg!!! alet_chicken
Hi, congratulations!! I treated my flock with Tylan last month - and the specialist poultry vet told me that the licence for Tylan changed very recently, so that there is now no withdrawal period. (In fact it was so recent that the tub of Tylan he gave me still had a withdrawal recommendation on it.) So maybe it would be safe after all to enjoy your Very! First! egg.
