We've been in this house for nearly 5 years and had our chickens free-ranging throughout. Apart from one fox attack about 3 years ago, when we had probably been letting them out too early, we have only lost the odd stubborn tree-dweller to predators.

However, a month ago a fox attacked early on Sunday morning, and we lost 3 hens. It came back last Friday mid-evening for another 2, and on Tuesday mid-evening and took 4 including the humungous Welsummer cockerel. We are moving house soon anyway, and have been able to rehome the remaining 8 hens and 4 newborn chicks (hatched yesterday!) to lovely people who will give them a safer home than we can offer at the moment.

It's like a ghost town out there at the moment - it's difficult to get used to heading out of the back door without getting mobbed.

Rotten foxes and their rotten hungry cubs

When we move, we will build Fort Knox (aka a WIR) and start again.
